SINGAPORE’S LEADING PRIVATE TUITION AGENCY

HOW DO I REQUEST FOR A TUTOR?

You can request for a tutor by submitting our online Request Form.

Upon receiving your request, we will Whatsapp you to discuss your child’s academic needs. We will spend the next few hours shortlisting several suitable tutors within our database and network for your consideration.

Our working hours are from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week.

Tuition usually commences within one week after you have selected a tutor.

TRIAL LESSON

The paid trial lessons can be 1.5 hours or 2 hours per session.

CAN I CHANGE THE TUTOR AFTER THE TUITION BEGINS?

You just need to pay for the tuition session(s) that have been conducted. There will not be any extra charges for the change.

AM I ABLE TO VIEW THE TUTOR’S CERTIFICATES BEFORE THE FIRST LESSON?

You can request to see the hardcopies of certificates of your tutor to be presented to you during the first lesson.

The client acknowledges that it is his/her responsibility to verify the suitability, credentials and qualifications of any tutor with whom he/she engages.

HOW MUCH DO I PAY FOR YOUR TUTOR MATCHING SERVICES?

Tutors Singapore is Singapore’s leading private tuition agency and our matching service is free for students/parents requesting for tutors. This is because our agency commission is charged to the tutor, not to you.

The client will pay to Tutors Singapore half of the fees payable in the first 4 calendar weeks. This amount is the commission to Tutors Singapore for matching the tutor to the client, and will be borne by the tutor.

Thereafter, the client will pay the tuition fees directly to the tutor.

If lessons are postponed during the first two weeks, the commission payable to Tutors Singapore will be based on the tuition session conducted the subsequent week(s).

The tutor shall collect all fees due to the tutor from the parent after the two weeks. Tutors Singapore will not assist in any recovery of fees.

PAYMENT OF FEES

The client is required to pay tuition fees only for the number of hours of lessons given by the tutor.

If you decide to stop the tuition after the first lesson, you are required to pay for only that lesson.

Please transfer the fee for that lesson to Tutors Singapore and we will transfer the tutor’s fee to him/her.

Tutors are not authorized at any time to collect the payment on Tutors Singapore’s behalf.

Tuition fees are to be paid every 4 weeks to the tutor, unless otherwise agreed between the client and the tutor.

PAYMENT MODE

We will provide our bank account information for you to make payment via internet banking or ATM transfer directly to Tutors Singapore’s bank account.

If the client fails to pay us, Tutors Singapore reserves the right to terminate the Assignment. This is in fairness to the tutor, who might need to give the available slot to another client if this Assignment does not materialize.

Once the payment is received, it will be acknowledged in the form of a receipt, issued to the payer (Parent/Requestor/Guardian) via Whatsapp, sms, email or other electronic communications medium. We will also provide details of the Tuition Assignment that can include: tutor’s name, hourly fee, date of commencement of tuition, subject(s), level, duration of each lesson and frequency, etc.

FIRST LESSON

Once the client accepts the tutor’s candidacy, the client will not be able to change the schedule of the First Lesson.

Clients are allowed to make changes in the schedule after the First Lesson is over. However, Tutors Singapore hopes that this is not necessary as the tutor has already reserved that slot of time for you.

If you want to make changes in the schedule, please consult with your tutor to ask if he/she is able to change the schedule or not.

The tutor is to bring his/her identity document, academic transcripts/certificates and relevant documents for the First Lesson for verification purposes.

If the tutor is unable to conduct the First Lesson of a tuition assignment, the tutor must call Tutors Singapore at least 3 business days before the actual lesson. If the tutor fails to notify Tutors Singapore of his/her cancellation/postponement, an administrative charge of S$30 will be imposed on him/her.

If the tutor fails to contact Tutors Singapore with a valid reason to inform us about the tutor’s absence from the lesson, the tutor’s profile at Tutors Singapore may be blacklisted. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

LOCATION OF TUTORING LESSONS

Tutors will conduct lessons at the student’s residence unless otherwise specified and agreed upon by both the client and the tutor.

If the client has a request for the tuition to be conducted at another location (eg a friend’s home), Tutors Singapore will ask if the tutor is able to accommodate the request.

Tutors Singapore and the tutor will not be responsible if the given location is occupied or not available for use for the lessons and the officially scheduled timings will still be counted as a paid lesson.

TUTOR REASSIGNMENT OR CANCELLATION OF ASSIGNMENTS

There is no obligation or contract to complete a fixed number of lessons, except for the First Lesson.

If at any time the client is not satisfied with the tutor, the client may request a replacement or termination. However, the client is responsible for paying the fee for the number of lessons given prior to termination.

Tutors Singapore will discuss separately with the client and the tutor regarding future tuition arrangements, and Tutors Singapore will change the tutor for the client. There will not be any extra charges for the change and the client needs to pay just for the tuition session(s) that have been conducted.

If the client cancels a tutoring assignment before the tutor completes the agreed number of lessons for the first 4 calendar weeks, Tutors Singapore assumes full claim to 50% of the tuition fees for the total number of lessons delivered in the month. For example, if the client had requested for 8 lessons per month, but the assignment was cancelled after the 5th session, Tutors Singapore will be paid pro-rated commission for the 5 lessons conducted.

Tutors Singapore will not be liable for any payment charges or issues arising from the cancellation of tuition assignments by the client.

If the client terminates the Assignment because the tutor is often late, skips lessons without valid explanations etc, the tutor will bear Tutors Singapore’s full commission fee.

If the tutor cancels the Assignment after confirming acceptance (that is, the client’s contact information and address have been given to the tutor), the tutor will need to compensate the commission which amounts to 50% of the fees payable (as stated in the confirmation Whatsapp, sms, email or other forms of electronic communications messages) for the first 4 weeks.

If the tutor wishes to cancel a Tuition Assignment before the end of the first 4 calendar weeks, the tutor is to inform both Tutors Singapore as well as the client at least 3 days before the next lesson date. Tutors Singapore will recover our legal share of the one-time commission of 50% of the fee for the first 4 calendar weeks from the tutor. Tutors are encouraged to have a long-term commitment as the clients have vested their trust in them.

TERMINATION

The tutor will receive full or pro-rated payment for the number of lessons rendered, provided the tutor has complied with the Terms of this Agreement.

The client has the right to terminate the tuition if the tutor is unable to produce the documents certifying his/her credentials. In such cases, the tutor has to pay Tutors Singapore the amount of money equivalent to the tuition fee for the day, as commission.

DISCLAIMER

We hold no responsibility or liability for problems, unhappiness, or disputes that are a result of the tutor or client.

Challenges Faced By Social Studies Students In Singapore

>  Students perceive Issue Investigation as having overwhelming scope and depth. Teachers and students feel that there is lack of time because of the limited number of lesson hours allocated to Social Studies each term week (usually around 3 periods of around 30 minutes each).

>  Teachers often try to cover curricular content as quickly as possible, in order to reserve enough time for revision and exam skills drilling. Consequently, the extensive investigative cycle required of Issue Investigation is often found to be extremely time-consuming.

>  Deficits of certain dispositions and skills among students also hinder the implementation of Issue Investigation. Some teachers have found that students’ passive learning tendencies – not “wanting to think” and unwillingness to read and conduct their own research – are major obstacles.

>  Students’ English language proficiency as well as IT literacy also are areas of concern, as these skills are often indispensable at different stages of the inquiry process of investigative learning – which includes formulating questions, gathering data, and presenting findings.

>  Lack of students’ interest in understanding the interconnectedness of Singapore and the world we live in. They are reluctant to learn and appreciate the complexities of the human experience, or to explore the complex tensions that characterise issues happening around the world and in Singapore.

>  Upper Secondary Social Studies focuses on the explicit teaching of thinking skills to assess and manage real-life information in meaningful ways. It also aims to build a deep sense of rootedness to the nation. The subject is interdisciplinary in nature, combining subjects such as Geography, History, Sociology, Political Science and Economics.

>  Hesitance to explore contemporary and global issues related to governance, students’ roles as citizens, living in a diverse society and globalisation. These are issues that affect the lives of our children as young citizens, and they prepare them for the responsibilities they need to exercise judiciously as adults in future. Social Studies encourages students to engage in policy issues instead of just relying on the government to achieve desired outcomes.

Benefits of engaging a reliable Social Studies tuition teacher

Just when you have finished preparing for one quiz, there is another coming up in 2 weeks’ time. Every day, new homework assignments and projects are added to a never-ending to-do list.

You can keep up, but just barely. This is stressful, especially when you dread the day when you cannot finish your homework in time because you don’t have the answers to the questions that your teachers asked.

Worse, your classmates – who are in your class because you had previously been achieving similar grades to theirs – are able to get the right answers and score higher marks. Very discouraging.

Good Social Studies tuition teachers will give you 1 to 1 attention, so that you can ask them how to solve those difficult homework and exam problems.

Tutors Singapore represents only qualified tuition teachers who already have a Bachelor’s, or are about to get one. Or they might have a Master’s or PhD in the subject that they are teaching you.

As they are experienced in teaching students in your academic level, they can easily and clearly explain to you what you need to know and do, so that you can urgently gain much higher marks.

Your Social Studies private tutors would also have materials to share with you – whether they are exam papers or homework assignments from other schools. Or, they would have good recommendations for you to buy workbooks that are most suitable for you to practice on, in order to gain mastery of the tricky concepts.

With Social Studies home tuition, you can get instant clarification in concepts that are difficult to understand.

You can also receive customised lesson plans tailored to suit your unique learning style and understanding of the different Social Studies topics, so that you may better absorb the content and understand the concepts.

Your Social Studies tuition teachers from Tutors Singapore are very familiar with the latest MOE syllabus and newest exam requirements. They have been teaching for between 2 to over 30 years and can identify the areas that you should focus on, according to your grade targets and pace of learning.

The current Social Studies syllabus can have content that is challenging for many students. Our Social Studies tuition teachers are experienced in teaching students at your academic level. They are familiar with the common misconceptions and the dangerous mistakes made by Social Studies students.

Double-checking your answers is useful only if you know how to create and put together the answers that the MOE really wants you to give.

Learn how to accurately analyze the questions, so that you can arrive at the answers that give you maximum marks.

Professional Social Studies tutors are able to show you how Social Studies concepts are applied when answering tricky exam questions.

You lost interest and became frustrated only because much of the syllabus did not make sense.

Once there is clarity and you are able to perform the simple and then the advanced tasks, your sense of achievement will lead you to better grades and even stronger mastery of Social Studies.

Students can be overwhelmed with having to maintain a healthy and balanced personal and academic life.

While it is beneficial to spend time developing leadership and team-building skills during co-curricular activities as well as having a good social life after school hours, this would also mean that students may have limited time to study.

Hiring a competent and professional Social Studies tuition teacher can help them to efficiently make use of their time when studying, so that they can holistically do even better in both their personal and academic lives.

Many Social Studies students fear speaking up and asking questions during lessons because they worry about being laughed at in class.

Social Studies  1 to 1 home tuition teachers will help students to have a better understanding of their lessons in school. Their private tuition teacher will patiently and clearly explain the difficult concepts to them.

Effective Social Studies tuition gives them the confidence of answering tricky questions when faced with unexpectedly challenging problems during school and national exams.

Our qualified Social Studies tuition teachers are experienced, and have thorough understanding of the common problems faced by Social Studies students.

They will be able to deconstruct complex Social Studies topics into simpler concepts, and customize learning materials to improve students’ understanding of these topics.

Increase your ability to give the RIGHT answers that your school exams and national exams require of you.

Engage the most competent and reliable Social Studies tuition teachers, to help you succeed.

Reviews of the effectiveness of hiring experienced Social Studies tuition teachers from Tutors Singapore

I am planning to do engineering at either NUS or NTU, because I am good at Chemistry and Physics. The type of analytical skills that I need to have in order to do well in Social Studies don't seem to be similar to how I analyze or solve science problems. Ms Koh is an MOE teacher and she teaches me how to answer correctly, as well as think through the questions and possible answers more effectively.
Fung Seng
Anglican High School
I am planning to take up Nursing when I go to poly. It is good for me to have more knowledge of how the world works, but my SS grades were dragging my overall scores down. Ms Jovine teaches at a good tuition centre, and she gives me many helpful tips of how to tackle the difficult questions. She also tells me what to do if (when?) I come across questions that I think I will not be able to answer and score well in.
Verene
St Hilda’s Secondary School
My other subjects are in the B or A range. I need to score better for SS because I will be taking General Paper when I get to junior college. I heard that having a strong foundation in Social Studies would help when I take GP, and that GP is very difficult to score high marks in. Mr Ang is a tuition teacher for both GP and SS, and he is really good at analyzing world events, as well as issues that impact Singapore. He teaches me how to apply this knowledge to SS questions.
Yvonne
Singapore Chinese Girls’ Secondary School
My parents had a shock when I scored a C, because I have always liked to read the news and developments around the world. I think it is my answering techniques that are the problem. Mr Goh looked at my past answers, and helped me modify and correct how I answer. This made a huge difference in how I analyze, as well as answer the questions.
Yang Sheng
Maris Stella High School

Importance of getting good Social Studies tuition

Education in Singapore can be overwhelming and stressful, whether you are striving to maintain an A grade, or want to prevent the risk of having weaker grades.

Just as hiring the right tutor can help you confidently achieve your grade objectives, engaging the wrong tutor can bring much misery when the student receives worse than expected grades at the school or national exams.

Social Studies is an important subject for any secondary school student who is planning to apply for admission into any junior college or polytechnic in Singapore.

If you are struggling when studying or revising for SS, getting reliable Social Studies tuition can ensure that you understand all the concepts covered in the syllabus.

An experienced Social Studies tuition teacher can provide his/her full attention to resolve your learning challenges - and will guide you to be able to apply the knowledge that you have learnt, when faced with difficult questions during important school and national exams.

Choosing the right Social Studies tuition teacher

  • Our Social Studies tuition teachers range from current & former MOE teachers to undergraduate & graduated tutors (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) majoring in Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Geography or History. Every tutor whose profile we will show you has a strong record of helping their students’ marks increase. They scored A’s for their own Social Studies exams, and can teach you useful exam tips and techniques so that you can achieve a quick boost to your grades
  • To ensure the effectiveness of every Social Studies tuition session, Tutors Singapore will recommend only tutors who have relevant degrees (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) in the subjects they teach. Each Social Studies tuition teacher must also have a track record of helping their students gain valuable marks during important exams
  • The MOE changes the syllabus whenever there is a need to be current with industry/the economy’s needs, trends and developments
  • These changes affect the Social Studies content – and importantly – the exam requirements, answer formats, and marking schemes
  • It is crucial that the Social Studies tuition teacher is familiar with the most updated syllabus, and that what they teach does not contradict what is taught in your child’s school
  • When providing recommendations of carefully-shortlisted Social Studies tuition teachers, Tutors Singapore will list and describe the relevant teaching experience of our tutors to assure you of their abilities to help students at your level to progress academically, and to achieve higher grades
  • Homework is given by school teachers so that their students can practice what was taught in school. It is important to be up to date in doing your homework, so that you can internalize the content. When you hand in your homework, you will find out from your school teacher if you managed to correctly understand what was taught in class. Knowing this helps tremendously when you are revising content for your school exams and for the national exams. Revision is not useful if you are learning and re-learning the wrong concepts that you think are right. Giving your teacher the wrong answers will not help you gain higher marks
  • Tutors Singapore’s Social Studies tuition teachers are experienced and have methodical knowledge of the exact skills and content that a student will need to excel in each of the chapters that you must master, in order to do well in your exams. Our Social Studies tutors are also able to create personalized learning schedules, so that their students are able to understand, absorb and retain new knowledge, more efficiently and within a short period of time
  • The syllabus, content and examination practices differ for each level of education
  • Many Social Studies students are frustrated with not being able to instinctively understand the content that is taught by their school teachers
  • Our tutors are familiar with the newest MOE syllabus, and they have taught students at your academic level
  • Tutors Singapore accepts tutor applications only when the tuition teacher has a degree (or is in the process of obtaining a degree) in the subject that they teach. This is to ensure that the private tutor has the necessary knowledge and expertise to adequately teach the correct content as well as to help the student arrive at error-free answers when responding to important exam questions
  • When providing recommendations of carefully-shortlisted Social Studies tuition teachers, Tutors Singapore will describe the relevant teaching experience of our tutors to assure you of their abilities to help students at your level to progress academically, and achieve higher grades
  • It is important that the Social Studies tuition teacher puts in the best effort when guiding and teaching you. A dedicated home tuition teacher will ask pertinent questions in order to know which areas you are struggling with. A committed private tutor is punctual and rarely would suggest that the lesson has to be re-scheduled. Competent tutors have scored A in Social Studies when they took their O Levels, and they would have at least a Bachelor’s in Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Geography or History. This means that their professional experience in Social Studies can help you achieve better grades, whether you are in Secondary 3 or taking your O Levels.
  • When recommending Social Studies tuition teachers, Tutors Singapore will facilitate communication between you and the tutor to ensure that both parties have a common understanding of expectations before confirming the tuition arrangements.
  • It is often the best for you to continue with one good tutor if the Social Studies tuition teacher is capable of teaching you and has already built a connection with you. This will ensure that you can benefit the most from his/her lessons since the tutor will be more familiar with your weaknesses and strengths, and can work on them throughout the subsequent academic levels
  • Our Social Studies tuition teachers have between 2 to 30+ years of experience in teaching students who are often from different schools. These Social Studies tutors have  accumulated notes and past year papers that they can provide to you for additional practice. Some tutors also prepare mind maps, common questions and pitfalls in past year papers, as well as self-designed practices referenced from assessment books
  • Tutors Singapore will indicate in the tutor’s profiles if the Social Studies tuition teacher is able to provide materials and resources for the students, when we recommend between 4 to 10 qualified tutors to you
  • Students each have different starting points as well as grade goals. Some students want to consistently score an A, and some students are aiming to get a C or a B for their national exams. Your Social Studies tuition teacher will evaluate your learning needs, and will suggest workbooks and practice sheets that are most suitable for you so that you can master content that will help you quickly achieve your grade targets
  • The best Social Studies tuition teachers can identify their students’ root causes of learning challenges, within the first lessons. These Social Studies tutors are experienced in using relevant step by step methods to competently address these vulnerabilities. They will create a study roadmap to help you systematically learn difficult content within short periods of time
  • We show tutor profiles only when they had received good feedback from parents and students. The quality of the Social Studies tuition teacher is very important to your academic success
  • Tutors Singapore removes from our database the details of tutors who did not receive positive comments

If the tutor is not interested in the Assignment that we contacted you with, please disregard the assignment message.

CLIENTS’ CRITERIA FOR SELECTING TUTORS

The criteria stated by the client for each Tuition Assignment can differ from case to case.

Some clients require MOE teachers, others state their preference for experienced undergraduates with proven experience to improve the grades of their students.

Tuition Assignments are based on tuition demand and how well the profile of each tutor matches with the client’s requirements.

Tutors Singapore makes tutor recommendations based on the tutors’ known track record in successful tutoring.

The submission of the tutor’s profile to the client does not bind the client to engage the services of the tutor, and remains subject to confirmation by the client.

FEES AND COMMISSION

Once the tutor and the client confirm a match, the tuition rate is non-negotiable once agreed upon.

The client will pay to Tutors Singapore the fees amounting to half of the fees payable in the first 4 calendar weeks. This amount shall be deemed as the commission to Tutors Singapore for matching the tutor to the client, and will be borne by the tutor who will forgo receiving the said fees paid by the client. Therefore, no payment will be made by the client to the tutor for half of the lessons conducted in the first month.

Thereafter, the client will pay the tuition fees directly to the tutor. The tutor shall collect all fees due to the tutor from any student or parent after the first two weeks. Tutors Singapore will not assist in any recovery of fees.

Tuition fees are to be paid every 4 weeks to the tutor, unless otherwise agreed between the client and the tutor.

If lessons are postponed during the first two weeks, the commission payable to Tutors Singapore will be based on the tuition session conducted the following week(s).

ACCEPTANCE OF ASSIGNMENT

Upon receiving an Assignment Description, the tutor may apply for the Assignment. If the tutor is chosen by the client, the tutor is bound to conduct the lessons as stated in the Assignment Description, or as mutually amended in subsequent communications.

TRIAL LESSON

Paid trial lessons can have 1.5 hour or 2 hour durations.

TUTORING LOCATION

The tutor will be teaching at the student’s residence at the mutually agreed upon time, unless specified and agreed by the client and the tutor. The tutor must provide his/her own transport to the client’s home/lesson location.

FIRST LESSON

Once the client accepts the tutor’s candidacy, the client will not be able to change the schedule of the First Lesson.

Clients are allowed to make changes in the schedule after the First Lesson is over. However, Tutors Singapore hopes that this is not necessary as the tutor has already reserved that slot of time for the client. If the client wants to make changes in the schedule, the client is to consult with the tutor to ask if he/she is able to change the schedule or not.

The tutor is to bring your academic transcripts/certificates and relevant documents for your first lessons with the client for verification purposes.

If the tutor is unable to conduct the First Lesson of a tuition assignment, the tutor must call Tutors Singapore at least 3 business days before the actual lesson. If the tutor fails to notify Tutors Singapore of the tutor’s cancellation/postponement, an administrative charge of S$30 will be imposed on the tutor.

If the tutor fails to contact Tutors Singapore with a valid reason to inform us about the tutor’s absence from the lesson, the tutor’s profile at Tutors Singapore may be blacklisted. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

You are encouraged to carefully and responsibly consider before committing to an Assignment.

CENTRAL PROVIDENT FUND

Tutors agree to be responsible for all required obligations to the Central Provident Fund as a self-employed person. This is because, you, as a tutor, are providing private tutoring services under a contract of service to the client as an independent contractor. The tutor is not an employee of Tutors Singapore, and the tutor accepts full responsibility for all income tax, insurance and other liabilities payable in relation to any fees generated from a tuition assignment.

TUTOR REASSIGNMENT OR CANCELLATION OF ASSIGNMENTS

If at any time the client is not satisfied with the tutor, the client may request a replacement or termination. However, the client is responsible for paying the fee for the number of lessons given prior to termination.

Tutors Singapore will discuss separately with the client and the tutor regarding future tuition arrangements, and Tutors Singapore will change the tutor for the client. There will not be any extra charges for the change and the client needs to pay just for the tuition session(s) that have been conducted.

If the client cancels a tutoring assignment before the tutor completes the agreed number of lessons for the first 4 calendar weeks, Tutors Singapore assumes full legal claim to 50% of the tuition fees for the total number of lessons delivered in the month. For example, if the client had requested for 8 lessons per month, but the assignment was cancelled after the 5th session, Tutors Singapore will be paid commission for the 5 lessons conducted.

Tutors Singapore will not be liable for any payment charges or issues arising from the cancellation of tuition assignments by the client.

If the client terminates the Assignment because the tutor is often late, skips lessons without valid explanations etc, the tutor will bear Tutors Singapore’ full commission fee.

If the tutor cancels the Assignment after confirming acceptance (that is, the client’s contact information and address have been given to the tutor), the tutor will need to compensate the commission which amounts to 50% of the fees payable (as stated in the confirmation Whatsapp, sms, email or other forms of electronic communications) for the first 4 weeks.

Tutors are encouraged to have a long-term commitment as the clients have vested their trust in you.

TERMINATION

The client has the right to terminate the tuition if the tutor is unable to produce the documents certifying his/her credentials. In such cases, the tutor has to pay Tutors Singapore the amount of money equivalent to the tuition fee for the day as commission.

The tutor will receive full or pro-rated payment for the number of lessons rendered, provided the tutor has complied with the Terms of this Agreement.

DISCLAIMER

While Tutors Singapore tries to provide clients and tutors with the closest tutor match possible, we cannot guarantee a satisfying match. We are very proud of the quality of the tutors that we are able to attract and retain. Because our tutors receive so many assignments from us, they rarely want to register with other agencies.

Our team of MOE teachers is the largest in Singapore.

Tutors are directly recruited by Tutors Singapore. We do not rent databases from other tuition agencies, and we do not rent out our database to licensees nor to subscribers.

Tutors Singapore has a team of qualified tutors who specialize in teaching university and polytechnic level modules, for undergraduate students who need private tuition and are studying at NUS, NTU, SMU and universities with a presence in Singapore.

Many new tuition assignments every day, at Tutors Singapore.
